Natural surroundings of the El Rivet area

Alt Maestrat region

A diverse landscape rich in flora, fauna, and hiking trails

One of the natural landscapes of Castellón is Alt Maestrat, which extends majestically, alternating between plains, valleys, ravines, and mountains, creating an environment in its purest and wildest state.
Nature intertwines with the vestiges of past eras, which provided its history and identity, such as rock art sites, springs, farmhouses, or dry stone constructions. The region possesses numerous areas of great ecological value. These provide shelter to an extensive variety of flora and fauna. They also allow for the practice of different activities related to the environment. The municipalities of Alt Maestrat have signposted routes and numerous approved trails to enjoy great excursions on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback.

El Rivet natural area

An example of Valencian oak forest

Very close by is also the El Rivet Municipal Natural Area. It is a magnificent forest of Valencian oak and holm oak where you can enjoy fantastic views of the municipality. This area is highly valued by the residents of Benassal and is a place to be in contact with nature.
The Municipal Natural Area “El Rivet” is located on the easternmost foothills of the external or Aragonese Iberian System, on the northern slope of the Sant Cristòfol hill, with a predominantly N-NW orientation. At about 900 meters altitude, it offers beautiful panoramic views of the impressive Maestrazgo mountains, an immense landscape of hills and ravines through which rivers and streams of great beauty flow.
